Teis Semey Quintet

The Teis Semey Quintet is the flagship of Teis Semey (Denmark, 1993). The band members from five different parts of the world met in Amsterdam. All five band members are strong and virtuosic instrumentalists and composers, and these qualities add to the remarkable dynamic range that the band radiates.

Their music is colored by the Scandinavian roots of Teis Semey, but is pushed together with the band’s shared love for indie, jazz and the avant-garde. In the unfiltered guitar-driven sound universe of Teis Semey, the band takes the listener on a journey through seas and forests. Stormy, calm, passionate and above all attentive music rips away the prejudice that jazz is hard to listen to: this is not cerebral music – these are emotions felt and expressed honestly through catchy compositions and deep interplay.

Every concert is a new concert – the band base their identity on a pressing urgency, improvising with each other and allowing their songs to either explode, float away, or go in any direction it wants. Interplay and honesty are their keywords – a bodily experience.

”Semey's compositions stretch the limits of the contemporary jazz vocabulary while maintaining a sonorous quality. Forget ’I can't wait what this Danish guy is going to do' and 'this Danish looking young fellow has a bright future ahead of him'. He's doing it already, and the future is now.” - Reinier Baas, Winner Edison Jazz/World
